KEEPING HUMBLE

On my journey as a Rainbow  Warrior I have tried to develop these qualities and talents along the way, and of course to maintain them.

To walk your talk

To keep life simple

To be true to one’s self

To have courage

To have humour

To be grounded

To believe

To always choose the light over darkness

To be pure of heart.

And to keep humble.

I reread, every now and then, this letter I wrote at Christmas 1999.  It describes in one letter one of the most trying periods of my life. You probably have another mode of keeping humble but this always helps me.

It seems in all good stories there is a telling of the greatest spectrum of emotions put to test. Here on the island of Møn, it seems very much so this year. My daughter has begun a great adventure, moving to Germany for work experience for two years. As most mothers will agree, seeing the first child fly so far from the nest is indeed difficult. I am more at ease because her good friend is there with her, and that is a most comforting thought.

This year, Kristian’s health has not been optimal. It is a long story, but the summary is he had to have his right leg amputated last month. My heart felt so torn to see such pain in one so innocent. It is here, in the realm of excruciating pain, we discover our self-worth, and strength within ourselves and others. It is here we feel the intensity of love, hope and understanding. I found that a squeeze from an unknown taxi driver’s hand helps to get you through. The compassion in the eyes of nurses, doctors and the other parents makes us realize ..we are not alone. My youngest son offering consolation with his gentle reminder that angels are beautiful creatures, and that Kristian has always been, and will always continue to be, a divine soul. The lesson it seems is quite ancient, live and rejoice in the present, learn from the past, have patience with the future, it will surely come!

My youngest loves schoolwork but is not all that enthusiastic about his teacher. His English vocabulary is ever growing and he enjoys reading and doing boy scout activities. He has a fantastic sense of humour, which is quite advanced for his age. He loves the water, and is at the swimming pool as much as possible. He has a new cousin born on the 1st. December.

Karsten is walking solo now, after years of hard work and training. The cheers he got from us who have hoped for this day for so long! His eyes have never shone brighter, a proud, brave, happy boy!  He just decided one day to get up by himself and march over to get his lunch box, without any form of support. Yes, we knew he was getting along, we have been coaxing him a lot lately as did his teachers. He will be going to boy scout camp in Jutland, and his next trip is a week’s skiing in Norway. (They won't let the Moms come!)

I myself have been happy enough with my job, but wouldn’t mind a position with more hours and a little more challenge. I am just about ready for anything!

I will wish you all now the best of the holidays, love and joy…and thank you for being on this planet!

Love, Susan

It was a few months after writing this letter that my son Kristian passed on. He brought unconditional love to everyone he met, and I have learned so much from my life’s experience with him. He opened my heart, and seeing the joy and will in his eyes has been the utmost expression of love I could ever have hoped to receive. I have also witnessed his ascension, with a beautiful vision, and can feel his presence surround me on occasion. There is no death, there is only transformation. I write this to those of you who still mourn. Your loved ones are there; they have but a new form. Love is eternal.

In peace and reverence,

Susan A. Starwing
